El PALACIO DE LAS VACAS, a magnificent fully-restored historic Moroccan-style Palacio having 24 rooms, four gardens, and 300 square meters of murals by Xavier Guererro, the leader of the Mexican Mural Movement and teacher and associate to Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros, is completely furnished with antiques and contains an art library unequaled in a private residence. The library contains many books about Xavier Guerrero, the muralist, and El Palacio de las Vacas. The Palacio houses a new professional kitchen and five new large very beautiful bathrooms in the old style, and is truly a masterpiece in art, architecture, and history nestled in the Centro Historico of beautiful five-hundred-year-old Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. The roof-top garden provides an incomparable panoramic view of the entire city and has space for a helicopter pad should you so desire!
This wonderful Palacio, with its ornate twenty-five-foot iron gates at the entrance and its surrounding thirty-foot walls, provides a truly private and secure oasis in the center of a magnificently beautiful historic city. The Palacio is an incredible example of the period of history known as "The Belle Epoch", and has all the old Mexican charm of this bygone era, yet posses all the modern amenities.
The home is within walking distance of all the old Spanish-style buildings and parks of the historic center as well as all of the old-style markets with wonderful fruits and vegetables and other great finds.
Located just two blocks from San Felipe Church and eight blocks from the Cathedral in the city's center, the Palacio is approximately thirty minutes from the city's newly-refurbished international airport and approximately four or five hours drive to wonderful beaches.
The original owner of the Palacio, Secundo Diaz, was the first cousin to President Porfirio Diaz, and the Palacio, a nineteenth-century monument to Mexican history, is now for sale! It can be yours for the extremely low price of six million U.S.dollars including all furnishings and priceless art treasures! The Palacio is only for those who demand the best in security, serenity, convenience, and unique beauty. It truly is unequaled in today's market, and the opportunity to own such a property is only available due to the age and physical condition of the American owner.
Provenance of The Palacio
The original owner of El Palacio de las Vacas was Secundo Diaz, the first cousin to President Porfio Diaz, I am told. Secundo had two daughters and one son. The son and another man liked the same girl, so, on horseback in front of the Palacio, there was a duel, and his son was killed.
The family chose to no longer live in the Palacio. They owned another less-grand house near Morelos Park on San Felipe Street, so the family moved to that house. Secundo traded the Palacio to his brother, Miguel Diaz for a ranch.
There were no other houses near El Palacio de las Vacas, so Miguel wanted a lecheria in the Palacio. During the day the cows would graze around the Palacio. At night they would enter the iron gate at the front of the Palacio and sleep in the back patio and in the house fronting on Reforma Street which was connected by an archway to the Palacio and was also owned by Secundo.
The local people saw the cows sleeping in the Palacio. Hence the historic name "El Palacio de las Vacas".
Later the house was a homeopathic medical school, a hospital, and the first college for women in Guadalajara was in the Palacio. Supposedly the house functioned as a brothel for a time. I purchased the property from Alexandra Muir, a transsexual member of the famous Muir family after which the giant redwood forest, Muir Woods, in San Francisco, California was named.
I have lived in the Palacio for fourteen years and have spent that time restoring it. (Current Owner)
A Mexican woman owned the house at one time and wanted to destroy it, so she put cement in the drains on the roof so that the rain water would destroy the house and collapse it. This damaged many of the murals on the second floor. I have someone currently restoring the murals. Recently, however, the school of restoration in Guadalajara, Ecro, has agreed to have the school's graduate students restore the murals in the Palacio without charge.
This is, of course a priceless asset to the property.
